this was something i didn’t know I needed 😂 thank you for the extensive guide and resources. perhaps i’ll practice for funsies because I love trying different handwriting from time to time 🫧
What a fantastic article! Permission to link to it from my paleography website? (It's dreadfully out of date, and most of the BYU links need to be replaced, so your article is the impetus I needed to revamp it!) https://www.paleobib.com/
Wow thanks so much Margaret, substack somehow definitely hit my target audience here haha! Definitely fine to link on your website (so cool!!). I'm in half a mind to make a series of this as I practice a lot of calligraphy styles (from 16th century italic and secretary hands to 18th century French Round Hands). Thanks again!
I know!! Sometimes I wish I could just get one of those old manuscripts from their glass cases, just to see it up close and feel the ink and the paper :-D
Fantastic article! Thank you for sharing the resources at the end 😀
I'm glad you like it!
It’s not far from Caroline minuscule, which is likewise very easy to read (and write) and gives our modern Roman font.
Thanks for sharing! I've recently begun writing in cursive again and even purchased my first fountain pen.
Oh amazing! It's so fun and addictive
This is a great article! Great resources and so interesting.
Thanks again Jessi
Really helpful article! Do you have any resources, especially manuals for 19th century calligraphy??
Thank you! I do have resources for 19th century calligraphy but more likely I'll share in a future substack article :)

Sounds great!! I'd love for more people to adopt italic haha!

You’ve piqued my interest! I’d love to add (and will read!) the whole series.
Yesss older books from Internet Archive have been my fave place to research lately.
That's my entire substack! Uncovering old art books ❤️
I love these too! Always looking in museums for old books and writings on walls in old castles. Love it!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Your comment made me look through my old photos from museums where I've taken pictures of calligraphy and manuscripts :') so beautiful

Inspiring! I would love to try writing a few poems in this handwriting with a ball point pen.
That would look so beautiful!!
